Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?” Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord! Psalm 4:6
Where do we look for relief during out times of tribulations? The skeptics taunt that there is nothing good. This is the foolish desire of those who do not know God. Many times the eyes of the worldly are blinded to the goodness of God. The psalmist responds to their doubts with an appeal that God would reveal Himself. In the revelation of God, there would be confidence in God’s presence and goodness. It is in the presence of God that God’s people find everlasting peace. Goodness and light can be found in God’s presence. “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Num. 6:24 - 26.
There are times when we are confronted with the overwhelming nature of what we are going through and like the Psalmist echo the question of where goodness or deliverance will come from. We too cry to God out of fear, pain, danger or sadness, for this deliverance and the experience of the Psalmist becomes a source of hope for us. If God could deliver the Psalmist, then God will deliver me/us too. The light of God’s countenance is the glory of God’s presence with us. In the Bible, darkness usually symbolizes ignorance of, and alienation from God, and all that this implies of sin, suffering, and death. Light on the other hand, symbolizes a knowledge of and harmony with God. God bestows God’s favor and blessing on us when we are in harmony with God. This, in turn, results in peace, joy, and life. The opposite of this is that God hides God’s face from those who are not in harmony with God. Without God’s uplifted countenance, you will not experience the hope of God’s light shining on your life, but will exist in spiritual darkness.
My challenge to us today then is to walk in the light. Christ is the light of the world and those who walk with Christ do not exist in darkness. Are you walking lighted paths? Christ says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. John 8:12. “Life and light and joy are found in the presence of the Lord”. [Charles E. Mudie]. Walk with Christ and walk in the light.
Till next Tuesday, be blessed!
