Antigua Moravians Honour Curtly Ambrose

At a service on Sunday September 24, 2000 at the Spring Gardens Moravian Church, Moravians in Antigua showed their appreciation of a member who excelled in cricket on the world stage.

It was a Service of Appreciation for now retired West Indies fast bowler, Curtly Ambrose. The full Antigua Staff as well as the Chairman of the P.E.C. was in attendance.

The Service was conducted jointly by Superintendent of the Conference, Bro. Challenger and by Bishop Lewis. Bro. Jarvis gave the meditation while those offering special music included the Cana Combined Choirs.

Bro. Enoch Lewis, President of the Antigua Cricket Association and brother of Bro. Algernon Lewis, brought greetings.

A painting of Bro. Ambrose done by Sis. Laurie Freeland Roberts was presented to him by Sis. Veshtina Samuel on behalf of the Conference.

Bro. Ambrose is a member of the Cana congregation.

May God bless him and his family in his retirement from this wonderful game!!

New Superintendent of the Virgin Islands Conference Appointed

On September 1, the Revd Glenvil Gregory was appointed as the new Superintendent of the Virgin Islands Conference.

Brother Gregory is a graduate of the United Theological College of the West Indies, the University of the West Indies both in Jamaica and of Moravian Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.

He has served in Trinidad and Antigua; and this is his second time of service in the Virgin Islands. He is currently the Pastor of the New Herrnhut congregation on St. Thomas.

Bro. Gregory's wife is Sis. Audrey and they have a daughter.

Revd George Richmond Off to John Hus

The Revd George Richmond who served for many years as Chairman of the Moravian Church in Guyana and oftentimes as the only ordained Minister has left Guyana. On October 1, Bro. George took up a call as Pastor of the mainly Caribbean congregation of John Hus Moravian Church in Brooklyn New York.

The congregation has been searching for a Pastor since the Revd Sherwin Alleyne left several months ago.

In the meantime, Revd Brinmore Phaul will serve as Acting Chairman of the Church in Guyana.

Our Prayers go out to all these members of our wider Church family who have been involved in this process.

Tobago & Joyce

We are pleased to report that while Tropical Storm Joyce passed over Tobago, she did not do any significant damage. We surely give God thanks for this.

Most activities on Sunday October 1 had to be postponed due to Joyce. However, at the end of it all, she brought mainly rain. Indeed, her loss of strength even before reaching to Tobago brought much comfort to the people.

EWI - Not At Unity Seminar

As Moravians from across the Unity gather in Suriname from October 1, for Unity Seminar, our Province will not be represented.

Sister Denise Smith Lewis was our delegate but had to withdraw due to health concerns. Brother Glenvil Gregory, the Alternate, was recently appointed as Superintendent of the Virgin Islands Conference and did not find it convenient to be away for so long so soon.

We trust that it will be a blessed time for all who gather and for our Worldwide Moravian family.

 P.E.C. Chairman in St. Thomas

The Chairman of the P.E.C., Bro. Nicholas, visited St. Thomas from August 29-31 at the invitation of the Executive Board. The two main issues which gave rise to the invitation were: the appointment of the New Superintendent and an impasse that had developed between the Executive Board and the Nisky congregation.

The Chairman held the following meetings: with the Joint Boards of memorial; twice with the Executive Board and the Building Committee; the Executive Board without the Building Committee and with the Nisky Joint Boards along with specially invited persons. There was also an excellent meeting with the staff of the Conference.

Before leaving St. Thomas, the Chairman also met with the Attorney for the Church, Mr. Samuel Hall along with Bro. Ronald Joseph.

They were all very useful meetings and served tremendously to reaffirm our common commitment to the cause of Christ and our Church.

Provincial Catechism

Please note that the Provincial Catechism is still very much on the agenda. There was a delay in securing some of the lessons. However building on the outstanding work of Sis. Eulencine Christopher, Sis. Roslyn Hamblin and especially, Bro. Ezra Parris, we are happy to let you know that all the lessons are now in hand and final editorial work is well on the way.

The Editorial Committee now includes Sister Roslyn Hamblin, Sis Julie Parris, Bro. Ezra Parris, Bro. Cortroy Jarvis and Bro. Joseph Nicholas.

The Catechism could be available before the end of the year.

WCC and CCC Hold Ecumenical Formation Seminar in Jamaica

The World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Caribbean Conference of Churches (CCC) will team up from October 24 to 27, 2000 for an Ecumenical Formation Seminar in Jamaica.

Representatives from member Churches of both organizations as well as specially invited officials will gather for this important Seminar.

Congratulations to Revd Deslyn Belle Watson

Your prayers are kindly requested for Sister Deslyn Belle Watson who will be ordained as Deacon on Sunday October 8, 2000 by Bishop Neville Brown in St. Kitts. This was scheduled for July but had to be postponed.

Sister Belle graduated from the United Theological College of the West Indies in May, 1999 and has been serving as the Associate Pastor of the Spring Gardens Moravian Church in Antigua.

She is married to the Revd Troy Watson who recently accepted a call to service in the Antigua Conference.

    A Season of Giving

Through the generosity of several members of our Church in Antigua and friends of the P.E.C. Chairman, the Provincial Headquarters at Cashew Hill is being given a facelift. The major work is the painting of the Complex and the replacement of the three (3) signs which were blown down by hurricane.

However, the season of gift also saw the gift of a riding lawn mower among other things. It is a real blessing that this much is being done without any claim on the income of the P.E.C.

Now that the rain has started and there is grass outside of the compound, the animals do not intrude as much. Therefore, the landscaping has resumed; and again, largely with contributions.

A big thank you to all these loving and generous members and friends. May God bless all of you.

    A Smile!

My grandfather was a farmer. He didn't claim to know much, but he always had a good crop. Once a student from the state agricultural college came out.

"Your methods of cultivation are hopelessly out of date," the young said. "Why, I'd be surprised if you get ten pounds of apples off that tree.

"So would I," my grandfather responded. "It's a pear tree!"

One Sunday our church bulletin announced that a sermon entitled, "There is a Hell" was to be preached at an evangelistic conference. Then it added, "Some of our leaders will be there and bring back a firsthand report."
